I will agree the Dems are slow to react or get ahead of an issue. However, reality is more genuine than perception. The rate of homelessness, and incivilty in the cities generates the perception of rampant crime. Statistics show a different picture. Individual acts do not mean a careening crime spree!
Why Washington DC? Memphis and Cleveland have much higher crime rates. St. Louis is considered the most deadly city in America. No federalizing police departments or deploying Nat. Guard there.
Focusing on the Dems missteps, misses the problem: Trump's agenda and chaos and the disparities created by crony capitalism.
Home rule for DC happened in 1973, no such recent decisions shifted much of the governance of St Louis nor Cleveland. DC is unique in the regard of home rule and being a federally controlled city, thats why DC.
Also worth highlighting that DC has a higher murder rate than both of these cities.
In typical Dem fashion you are doing exactly what this author highlights doesn't work. Crime is up since 2019, its down if you select specific COVID-> NOW windows of data, but that is not how people think.
They think "Becky was raped last year. James was assaulted last week" - as long as people know people who are victims their perception of crime will reflect that. This is why random acts of violence have a much higher toll on society than drug dealer A shooting drug dealer B.
Lastly when you are looking to place blame, nebulous academic concepts like Crony Capitalism doesn't stick. You have a nepo baby governor of california, nepo baby candidate(s) for mayor of NYC etc. How is that any better than some rich guy using daddy's money to get richer? It isn't.
The thing that has caused the most damage to the average american is not, despite the shrieking, billionaires. It is government. They devalue our currency, fail to do any aspect of their job for decades on end, fund their NGO/Mil-industrial buddies, create massive issues with experiments gone awry (open borders, COVID etc) and above all else in terms of economic impact they drive industry consolidation through legislation. Create requirements where only the biggest companies can survive, what happens?
All the small banks are owned by big banks now. No new banks get created.
All the small medical practices are getting bought by large PE and huge medical companies.
These types of problems show up one place - your wallet. Because your ability to vote with your dollars, a hallmark of capitalism, has been removed by government bureaucrats. That is not capitalism in any way, it is straight up pro-government socialist nonsense that makes up the core of what Dems offer. Highly consolidated elitism where they speak condescendingly to the majority of people from their nepo baby mansions and hand me down university jobs.
In politics public perception is more important than reality. At least if you want to win elections. I think there’s a lot of truth in what SE Cupp says. I think Democrats need to listen to the voters, all voters. I’m just pleased that democrats.org finally got a homepage showing some young white males, actually just showing some males in lieu of the four black women and one old white woman they had there previously. But why did it take so long?
Anyway , I don’t think most voters will like it if Trump follows through to put the military in more cities as he named.
1) What large cities are run by Republicans? 2) In many Republican-run states, the governors do not let the Democrats actually do policy in the cities. Texas is an example. Abbott et al think they can run cities better in their ivory towers. So much for less intrusive central government.
I'm hard-pressed to think of a single GOP-controlled large state that has restricted local control over policy as broadly or as deeply as California has over its cities and counties in the last 12+ years of single-party rule. There are 6M Republicans, 2M Independents, and millions more adults here all being hijacked by a hyper-progressive, deeply urban activist cabal forcing their policies across a huge and geographically, culturally, and economically diverse state.
If you don't think the state-mandated "climate action plans" adopted by progressives locally to meet requirements met by progressives in Sacramento, which place absolutely insane requirements for wholesale changes of how Californians get around, counts, then I don't know what to tell you.
If Californians in my area truly understood what the CAP was doing, and how it's responsible for thinks (bike lanes, car lane and parking removals, increased fees everywhere, high-density housing, redirected road construction) is just random city hall pig-headedness, there probably /would/ actually be riots about it.
"cabal" is an entirely reasonable description of the mostly under-the-table ju-juitsu being performed under the auspices of "climate change" in California to effect rando left-wing and progressive goals.
In this case, there is no way to judge if a Republican would do any better. In fact, it's not clear to me that Republicans generally, like cities at all. Hence cities are run by Democrats for the most part. Yet, we could not exist as a viable country without both cities and rural areas.
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson switched parties this year from Dem to Republican as he looks forward to running for statewide office. He served his first time as a Democrat. City Council and the majority of Dallas Area voters lean left. Check out Trump Vs Biden wins by county in Texas to get a good idea about Democrat strongholds in Tx.
You specifically said "none of the large cities in Texas are run by Republicans." I provided two examples showing that this was false. It's pretty simple.
It's your party that is ending democracy in this country. What have you done to stop them. You were there when this downhill slide started. Why didn't you stop the slide? Now you just whine about the Democrats not stopping what you were part of starting.
Preach, SE! I have a deep wellspring of personal distaste for Donald Trump, which pretty much started the first time I saw him in the newspapers in the mid-70's. However, you're correct: the Democrats can't win by denying the kernel of truth behind what Trump says. It would have been better for us to have acted first, but -- barring that -- we can at least NOW have the grace not to negate our fellow citizens' feelings by saying that what they fear isn't happening. We should cede the point to Trump, THEN propose an alternative solution that makes better sense.
Hard to imagine you being any more condescending about Democrats? Why do you defend a man lying thru his teeth instead of calling him out? While attacking Democrats for pointing out the truth! Have you always believed morality is irrelevant and political salience is all that matters?
Tell me about a time you ceded a point to a right winger and had people agree with your solution. Because I have yet to see that happen. It becomes I told you so.
SE makes no judgment about Trump lying about DC. But it is “elitist” for Democrats to use facts to support an argument. She also ignores the fact that it was Democrats in March of 2021, without a single vote from Republicans passed the American Rescue plan which provided billions in appropriations for local and state police departments whose budgets had been upended by reduced tax revenues during the pandemic. So Republicans refused to “fund” the police but a journalist, like Cupp, can ignore facts and pretend feelings are all that matter. Under her theory, lying is authentic so long as it’s reaffirms what people already believe. Thinking like that got us the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
How people “feel” is of the utmost importance. This is how citizens vote.
You can quote statistics at them all day long till their eyes glaze over but that will never assuage them.
If they do not feel safe, they will vote so accordingly to feel safe and will go along with any game plan in order to do so. We’re talking fear here not logic.
The Dems, once again, are missing the boat.
Btw- I’ve voted straight blue for thirty years and will continue to do so.
The people who live in DC vote Democratic. The people who live around DC vote Democratic.
The goddamn people who should be most unhappy if any of this crap were true think this is another “migrant caravan” created to scare people who don't like anywhere near DC.
The real purpose was to take over the DC cops so they can't stop the next January 6th.
I don’t know. Maybe you could start with Joseph Campbell on myth. You know when emotions get heavily tied to a particular narrative it’s damn hard to get people to understand data on a chart and how it undermines their narrative about the world. i’m thinking now of the crisper woman Jennifer DOUDNA in her book on the discovery of crisper. Near the end, she talks about how she hopes the government will react to reap the fruits of crisper and regulate it. She has a totally naïve view of politics, which is understandable since she spent her life studying a very specific area of science and being acquainted with the methods and values of science .the world of politics is widely different in its values and how it functions.
We have a few different things going on here, the DC issue is a specific problem and needs to be addressed or not depending on your viewpoint. The larger problem is what SE is talking about, how do Democrats start winning? Stop trying to die on every hill. Immigration is a winning issue for the R's so let them have it, and start talking about the economy. Trump says crime is bad in DC, well Mr. President crime goes down when everyone has a job. Mr. Latin & Black male who voted for Trump because they thought he was going to help the common man, what policy has helped you? Here are some policies that the D's are going to implement if you elect them in 26 & 28. Limiting ownership of single family homes to 3 by corporations. Deregulation where it makes sense, but maintaining clean water. Cuts to the Government like Clinton was able to do and then balance the budget, no Republican has done that in years. Tangible actions from every angle, social media, podcast, legacy media, all on one topic, the economy.
Maybe “common sense in government” is the tagline. I think you’re exactly right David there is such obvious low hanging fruit for the Democrats going into 2026. I don’t think it’s too early to start articulating some of it more. As a party, not just individual candidates.
I like it. I have concerns if we drift too far from the message of the economy, that is what got us in trouble in the first place. "A common sense economy" might work, but smarter folks than I will figure that one out.
It took Clinton months and months of planning, meetings, input from experts, research, etc. to come up with a viable plan to accomplish a balanced budget and still try and meet the needs of the people. Is anybody willing to work that hard anymore? Does anybody see that it is a complex problem, yet not unsolvable with a team that is focused on the goal? Democrats should read Woodward's book on how Clinton achieved this and then pick a leader who is willing to put in the hard work, who understands the issues, and can form a team to design some positive policies that have a goal of helping every-day Americans. The work may be hard, but the concept is simple !!
Sadly, the statistics do not support your documented playbook.
Crime has NOT metastasized in DC. His own freaking government says so (it's down 26%). So those people obviously need to be fired.
What is driving this is a DOGE kid got mugged. So, my God, we need to call in a 12 alarm fire because someone who thinks Trump is a God was attacked!
Chuck Todd is correct, we need to ignore getting into the mud with Trump. We cannot stoop to his level. It's like Mark Twain Said, "Don't argue with stupid people. They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience."
We need to treat this administration like a bad TV program and just change the channel and ignore it.
I know that is easier said than done, but we must so that it's rating go into the dumper.
I live in Memphis and statistically it is worse than Washington DC. However Memphis is 295 sq miles with a population of 610k. Most of the crime is in the outlining poor communities. I live downtown and feel very safe as in many neighborhoods. Washington DC on the other hand is 68 sq miles with 702k population. It has been awhile since I have been to DC but I did not feel safe.
Let me be clear I am 65 a year old southerner, moderate, Jesus guy who severely hates the son of a bitch (trump). We are in a battle against fascism. We are all in this together (Catholic ,atheist, agnostic, muslim, jew, …) . Republicans are good at this information game. Democrats suck at it. Democrats should just say something like this ‘We believe sending troops is unnecessary but support the president in addressing the DC crime problem.’
The arguments that Democrats make about societal ills are nuanced, and takes actual intellectual rigor to wrap your head around. Most Americans prefer a simple answer to complex problems, but it doesn't work like that. All of the types of crimes you point to are the result of poverty, and poverty is a structural violence. The reaction to that structural violence is manifested by theft and physical violence. When they dig down into the reasons why there is a large, poor, black population in DC, Republicans just throw up their hands and say 'How long are black people going to say they're the victims of racism?'. But if you're not willing to look at the roots of a problem, you'll never fix the problem. You can't fix a house's foundation by painting the dining room.
Actually fixing a problem is one thing. What you say to the public about a problem and how you’re going to fix it in order to win an election is something altogether different. most voters don’t do nuance. They hardly know who’s on the ballot. Keep it simple address problems directly with a solution that appeals to voters. once you’re in office the real work can begin.
Democrats have just continuously missed the mark when it comes to reading the public. The public, whether we like it or not are emotional in their assessments of situations in the country. They are not "show us the statistics" and then you will convince us, thoughtful individuals. That goes against everything because if something is felt at a visceral level it does not make any difference what the facts might be. All a person has to do is say, "Bullshit, I don't care what you are saying, I know how I feel about it and I am right" - logic loses out every time.
Take 2 Democratic Senators, which one is going to connect to the public; Bernie Sanders who has the oratory skills to have people feel how the billionaire class has agendas not in the best interest of the country OR Chuck Schumer who speaks with a tone where people say, "oh no I'm not listening to this, quick, turn the channel." Bernie is believable because he believes it, Schumer is not believable because he is seen as being a fraud whose true interests lie with Israel and not the United States.
Lastly, Democrats have cooked their own goose because not only have they been loathe to engage with the public without lecturing them, trying to force policies which the public will not accept such as prioritizing open borders, LGBTQ lifestyles, and DEI initiatives no matter how well-intentioned they may be. These are visceral with extremely strong emotions attached to them.
Long-time Dem here. If my party is genuinely serious about regaining power at the national level, these three issues must be abandoned and aggressively disavowed: unchecked illegal immigration, leniency toward violent crime, and unconditional trans rights. I agree that the habitually unclever Trump is in fact laying a somewhat clever trap here.
" That pic has been debunked.". That's a serious point if true. We seem to make policy based on the 'bloody shirt'. Any way you could provide a link or decent search phrase?
SE cupp i respect you and your conservative ideology but you seem to spend more time with criticism of the Democratic party and that's ok but what about Donald Trump's maga that's destroying democracy with out it we can't share our opinions
Except that by pretty much every measure available, crime is at a multi decade low in DC. Without your straw man argument - DC is unsafe - nothing you say makes any sense or has any policy or political accuracies. Everything you say is based on either a lie or an incorrect reading of math. Facts are facts, even if they contradict your beliefs. Do better.
Additionally, a person’s feeling unsafe is not inherently a comment about crime statistics. It’s an expression of that person’s sense of safety. If crime stats are low in my neighborhood, then I get attacked. I can guarantee that I will not feel safe afterwards.
Can we acknowledge that fear is also often hyped to MAKE people feel unsafe? Crime may statistically be going down, but if the president of the United States incessantly talks about what a hell hole DC is, can you blame Americans for feeling unsafe? Yes, crime needs to be addressed, homelessness needs to be addressed, but purposefully drumming up unnecessary fear that "makes people feel" unsafe is not the same as something "being" unsafe. The Democrats should not be blamed because they cannot control a pathological liar, or the gullibility of his followers. We live in the real world and yes, we need to come up with solutions for the real problems we have, which would be a helluva lot easier without the constant negative hype from the liar-in-chief.
I think the point of the article is not that Trump’s tactics and strategy are laudable, but that there’s a pattern, a playbook and that responding with “reality”, statistics accomplishes little from a political perspective.
You absolutely have the right to your opinion, but to accuse me of lying, well I disagree with that, now I agree everywhere community's have a crime problem and the community has elected officials to do deal with it, the military has no extended purpose by the constitution to patrol the streets of America. And my political belief is everyone including Donald Trump should follow the constitution and the rule of law. Thanks for replying

Weirdly enough, Jonathan, I happen to be a Democrat.
My comment was not directed at you but the author, SE Cupp, someone for whom I generally have had respect in the past.
Cool. I guess you didn’t realize that your comment got posted as a reply to my comment.
No I did not. It was the second comment I made on her article. Must not have realized I was replying to you not her.☺️
Tell me about a time you ceded a point to a right winger and had people agree with your solution. Because I have yet to see that happen. It becomes I told you so.
What parts of DC are you people hanging out in?
And if we want to go after violent cities, let's start with St. Louis, Missouri and Detroit, Michigan.

DC comes in at #25.

Lying comes naturally to her.

Median household income in DC is $106k.
Median home value is $600k and my guess is that includes condos. Otherwise it would be higher.
When people paint this picture of "a large black, poor population" a lot of times they're thinking of DC in the 1980s & 1990s.
In the 2020 census, black people were 41.4% of the population. White people were 39.6%. Hispanic or Latino was 11.3%. Asians were 4.9%.
Roughly 20% are under 19 and 17% are over 65.
14% of DC lives below the poverty line.
In Alabama, it's 15%. In West Virginia, it's 16%. In Louisiana, it's 18%.
This is not the hellhole Donnie claims it is. If he wants to rescue someone, he should send the National Guard to Alabama.
It's also a city who took an economic hit during Covid.
This is a test run at locking down Congress and the Supreme Court.
Well said! People always want a simple fix, but it’s not simple. Solving poverty has never been simple and it never will be simple.

Who is writing this crap?!
She's always been a GOP hypocrite, a trump mouthpiece under the guise of bothsidesism.
A shill.
Smarter than you think. At least in some areas.
How you feel is your reality, even if facts say otherwise. Have to address feelings. And that is not Big Balls. That pic has been debunked.
" That pic has been debunked.". That's a serious point if true. We seem to make policy based on the 'bloody shirt'. Any way you could provide a link or decent search phrase?
As a dem living in a blue city I completely agree with you SE. Well said.
SE cupp i respect you and your conservative ideology but you seem to spend more time with criticism of the Democratic party and that's ok but what about Donald Trump's maga that's destroying democracy with out it we can't share our opinions
SE Cupp has always been a GOP hypocrite. Don't let her fool you.
I can‘t understand Dems generally but I am for Dems like Josh Shapiro, Wes Moore, Andy Beshear, Mark Kelly, Ruben Gallego or Elisa Slotkin.
For a lot of people beliefs supersede facts. Not acknowledging that would be, well, not accepting a fact 🤷🏻♀️
Yowsa. And that is a difficult fact for many to acknowledge. The heartland is in enlightenment .5.
We need to move forward beyond 1.0 towards 2.0 based upon what humans are not what we want them to be. I’m thinking of SAPOLSKYBEHAVE.
