The SOTU hasn't mattered for awhile now. My dad watched it fairly regularly. The last time I watched, 2003 by George W Bush. It doesn't matter that much to a viewing audience. Perhaps Nixon had it right when he sent his last SOTU in written format to Congress.
It has come down to the Trump version and our knowing how the union is faring these days. I'd rather watch movie clips of F1 again than watch the SOTU.

Yes it does matter. It is very unfortunate that number of people who watch SOTU is lower than the numbers of those who watch a game, or lower than those who tuned to Diana’s funeral.
That said it is very important and reassuring to hear that "immigration laws" will continue to be enforced as that is the right thing to do. You don't shut down law enforcement in a country because few things can go wrong in process. It will be very important to hear about protecting voter integrity and plans to roll out voter identification. It will be very important to hear about plans for job creation amidst the fear of AI taking over jobs. It will be very important to hear that inflation (unlike the 4 years between 2021 thru 2024) will continue to stay under control between high 2 and low 3 percentage points despite all tariffs. And yeah it will will be important to hear about the plans for $$ gained through tariffs.
Last but not the least it will be very important to hear about those things that he is silent on like Epstein files and plan to reduce debt. It's a shame that we are still talking about Epstein file for nearly a decade without even charging a single person of crime.
